Mr. Harper and Mr. McGuinty:
I'm outraged that US corporation Caterpillar is closing its Electro-Motive plant in London, Ontario, abandoning 450 workers, their families, and the community.
Caterpillar just reported that annual profits rose 83% to a record $4.9 billion; the CEO of Caterpillar was paid more than $10 million last year; it's pure greed that the company ordered its workers to take a 50% cut in wages, locked them out of work and shut the plant.
Electro-Motive received $5 million in federal tax breaks announced on the factory floor by Mr. Harper in 2008; and the company has benefited generously from corporate tax cuts implemented in recent years by both the Harper and McGuinty governments.
I urge your governments to order the company to pay back our tax money which your governments gave them and use the money instead to help the workers who are now without jobs.
I also urge your governments to develop a modern industrial strategy that will create and attract responsible corporations which invest in good jobs in our communities.
